MS-6V6

This 6V6 (6P6P) powered amp claims 12.5wpc and is sold as a headphone / integrated amp. I have not owned one or ever heard one. It looks to me rather like a three bar electric fire :)

Excellent amp. I’ve done some comparison with Yaqin VK-2100 hybrid and Audioromy M-84A tube amp and 6V6 is by far the best among this trio. The remote’s volume control is not among the best – increasing or decreasing the volume a little is not possible, it always changes at least 5 db or more. The volume control knob in the amplifier itself has also some slack.

Otherwise the unit is very well built and has a quality feel to it.

6V6 sounds pretty good with stock tubes, but has a bit shady high’s – some clarity would be in order.

I’m currently driving a pair Dynaudio A42’s with this amp and 12,5 W seems to plenty – no problem there.

The amp has no hum or other noices, so it’s a pleasure to listen with phones. Grado SR60’s work very well a they have the same impedance as the headphone out (32 Ohm).

If MS-6V6 comes accross, I would recommend to have a go with it. Infact, I have a spare in unopened box if somebody’s interested…

hello there , i would like to say thanx for gettin this site goin , its needed !
ok , i would like to add to kristians comments on the ms6v6 , i got mine for a measly £140 brand new and box’d from alphamission , its also 240 grid so hopefully it wont go bang or somethin ! i dont believe people should run any chinese amp that has a 220- 230 trans , they will run but bloody hot !!
you can buy 4-5 differant chinese amps from a wonderfull chap who converts them first for very little money at crowthornetubes , trust me this guy knows his stuff !!
eg , a mc10l on 240 brand new for under £400
back to the 6v6 , i changed the stock chinese valves straight away all 8 of them
i have been runnin mine on electro harmonix for over a year now , they have as i understand it a lovely blue perfectly conditioned glow , wonderfull at night with the lights off ! im gettin amaizin bass & mids with knife edge hi’s
highly recomend this mod
mmm yes the volume control does have slack and makes fine volume control difficult , dont bother with the remote because as kristian explained ita a kinda all or nothin up n down volume control – not nice , i dont use mine , mmm 3 bar fire looks – maybe a bit true
ive realy no complaints , coupled to lake audio model 5.1 spkrs pure magic please check em out
ive also a leak tuner , nad cd , and dab yuk thing !!
nothin but praise for mine , does anyone know of any other mods ???
cant mention any background noise at all
tube cd player nxt

support the tube help sites brgds chris

I bought the 6V6 last year for a couple of hundred quid after spending ages oggling some real high end monoblocks that after getting made redundant, I could no longer justify. I took the gamble and man it payed off. I was a tad dissapointed when I first heard it as it sounded a bit wooly, so I changed the valves to Tung-Sol 6v6’s and to Electroharmonics for the other 4. The new tubes awoke the beast but I think had I let the original tubes run in it would have got there eventually.
I run a Marantz CD6000 ose, an Edirol soundcard for 320 MP3’s and, also Vinyl through an entry level Pro-Ject player, they all sound fantastic with this amp; I do use the best interconnects I can afford though.
The remote volume does jump in large chunks but it’s not really a problem, just a little strange after using an amp that has delicate control. The actual remote handset is quite impressive compared to the usual plastic rubbish, you could do some damage if you hurled it at someone.
I run a pair of B&W CDM1 NT and the tones are perfect.
Don’t be put off by the 12.5 watts, plenty for my ears although it might struggle in a large room for a banging party.
I have seen this amp for sale at around £400 to the door, twice what I paid before the weak pound; knowing what I know now, I’d happily pay that if someone ran off with mine.

Cheers,
Adam.

I have just bought one of these used and there is no output from the speaker connections. Has anyone came across any problems like this? What is the likely failure….both Left and Right outputs are not working.

Are you sure the switch for speakers/headphones are in the right position?

Thanks for the reply, I appears the switch is not operating. It should be a simple repair once I find a replacement switch.
While I have it apart I was thinking of replacing the tubes. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding what tubes work well with these amplifiers and what ones to avoid? Are the stock tubes fairly low quality or are they OK?
Does anyone have a biasing procedure tp set up for new tubes?
Regards,

ok im back after another year of ms bliss , doug i have now run this amp for over 3 yrs and not a peep from it i still love it every time i use it , that cant be said for any of the music angels !! hey i never knew there were angels in hell ? ok ive tried rft valves but they have massive start up flash and this reduced their life to about 1 month !! so now im runnin mullard coke bottles , mmmm so damm good if you can afford em ! that said i think any 6v6g fat valves is the way forward , the only other tubes i recommend is the electro harmonix , ive used these for 3 yrs now upto 3 hrs a day faultless , well i hope that you get the switch problem sorted , i really love this amp and bear in mind that the price of them is goin up ! to be honest i would not part with it for £500 ! ok and i have now the almost matching yaoin cd player , fab , fab , fab , £300 is no money for this go get 1

i hope more people find this site its needed , i wish u luck but its worth it

Can the MS 6V6 be used to run a powered sub aswell as the stereo speakers? What would be the best method of connecting it and siting the powered sub?
Coud the methods be used on any 2 channel tube driven amplifier?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Doug, I’ve deleted your duplicate comment on the welcome page. Powered subs have such a high input impedance that they are effectively zero load. You can connect it however you want. It will make no difference. For convenience you could use whichever terminals you currently have free. You will need a sub with high level inputs or you will need to knock up some kind of L-pad attenuator if you only have a line level input. Sub siting is well outside the scope of this website but information on the topic is all over the web.

Hi there. I would like to use my MS-6V6 as a headphone amp. Can I do that without having any speakers connected? My concern is that I blow up something when speakers are not connected.
Thanks.

Hannibal, look at the schematic – when the phones are plugged in the ground is lifted from the speakers – ie they are not connected. It is fine, just leave the headphones in. You could fit some 10w ~20 Ohm resistors to the outputs if you are really bothered.

Thanks alot Dan. I dont understand schematics, and I am not quite sure I understand why speakers or resistors are not needed. But as long as I can enjoy good music, without blowing the amp up, it is god enough for me.
Maybe the schematics also can tell me why I sometimes loose sound for a few seconds in one speaker, but when plugging headphones in I dont have the same problem?
Thanks again for your fast answer.

hey dan,
im runnin general elec g’s , no probs yet !!
what causes a valve to start burnin bright cherry red down its length ? is it a loss of vacc or is it caused by the amp ? that was after 2-3 hrs a day 4-5 days a wk ,for 3 yrs –
im sure its a valve issue ????
do these amps need bias adjustment ? can they be adjusted ??
can you recommend a good replacement vol pot ? no remote – i dont use mine its crap ! also could i use 2 amps with a pre amp n how ???

cheers – chris
